Nigerian Natural Resource Charter Benchmarking Exercise.

On December 9, 2014, CPPA and the Nigerian Natural Resource Charter (NNRC) launched a report of their second assessment of the governance of Nigeria’s petroleum wealth. Using the Natural Resource Charter (NRC) framework and a traffic light scoring system, the report systematically catalogues the state of Nigerian petroleum governance, and identifies crucial policy changes since the first assessment in 2012.

On November 19, 2014, Dr. Folarin Gbadebo-Smith joined leading public officials, practitioners, and analysts in the energy industry to evaluate Nigerian Local Content implementation. The forum focuses on the challenges stakeholders face in remaining compliant with the Local Content law, and will also provide industry updates on published resolutions. Speakers include the Honorable Henry Seriake Dickson, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State; H.E. Dozen Allison-Madueke, Honorable Minister of Petroleum Resources; Ernest Nwapa, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board; Olufemi Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund; and Emeka Ene, Chairman of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN).Click here for more information.

On April 17, 2014, Mr. Ademola Akinrele visited CPPA. He shared insights from decades of practice before Nigerian courts, highlighting the role of lawyers in strengthening the rule of law. Mr. Akinrele’s comments emphasized the need for ethics courses in Nigerian legal education, lifetime tenure for judges, and better judicial caseload management.

On April 16, 2014, Mr. Arinze visited CPPA to discuss his book “Nigeria and Her Oil: Myths and Realities.” The discussion ranged from the loss of Nigeria’s recent loss of 27 rigs, the impact of the continued delay in passing the Petroleum Industry Bill on Nigeria’s oil sector, implications of US shale oil for Nigeria’s economy, and considerations for the reform of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.

In March 2011, CPPA, in collaboration with the Murtala Muhammed Foundation hosted a ‘Policy Dialogue with the Presidential Candidates” to encourage the Nigerian public to engage more proactively on issues with Presidential candidates.
